2022-23 NHL Trade Deadline: Teams Load Up for Postseason
The NHL trade deadline for the 2022-23 season has passed, and teams made a flurry of moves over the past few days.[0] Many of the big teams in the Eastern Conference loaded up for the postseason, with Bo Horvat going to the New York Islanders, Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrick Kane to the New York Rangers, Timo Meier to the New Jersey Devils and Ryan O'Reilly to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired forward Nick Bonino from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick, a 2023 seventh-round pick and defenseman Arvid Henriksson.[1] The Montreal Canadiens retained 50 percent of Bonino's contract in exchange for defenseman Tony Sund and a 2024 fifth-round pick.[2] The Detroit Red Wings sent forward Jakub Vrana to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a seventh round pick in 2025 and Dylan McLaughlin.[3]
In exchange for a 2023 second-round pick and 2024 fifth-round pick, the Buffalo Sabres acquired forward Jordan Greenway from the Minnesota Wild.[4] The Wild acquired defenseman John Klingberg from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for unknown return.[5] The Wild then acquired forward Marcus Johansson from the Washington Capitals in exchange for a 2024 third-round pick.[5] In a trade, the Winnipeg Jets got forward Nino Niederreiter from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a 2024 second-round draft pick.[5]
The Vancouver Canucks traded a protected 2023 first-round pick (originally obtained in the Bo Horvat deal) and a 2023 second-round pick to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for defenseman Filip Hronek and a 2023 fourth-round selection.[6] The Blackhawks traded Patrick Kane to the New York Rangers on Feb. 28, 2023 in exchange for a 2023 conditional second-round pick and a 2023 fourth-round pick.[7] In return for a conditional 2025 first-round pick, 2026 second-round pick, Joey Anderson, and Pavel Gogolev, the Toronto Maple Leafs obtained defenseman Jake McCabe, forward Sam Lafferty, a conditional fifth-round pick in 2024, and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2025 from the Chicago Blackhawks.[8]
It is being reported that the Pittsburgh Penguins have made a trade with the Anaheim Ducks, acquiring defensemen Dmitry Kulikov in exchange for forward Brock McGinn and a third-round pick.[9] In exchange for forward Zack MacEwen, the Philadelphia Flyers got forward Brendan Lemieux and a 2024 fifth-round pick from the Los Angeles Kings.[1]
