Jim Boeheim Retires After 47 Seasons as Syracuse Men’s Basketball Coach

On Wednesday, Syracuse University announced that Jim Boeheim was retiring as head coach of the men's basketball team after 47 seasons.[0] Before the announcement, Syracuse had been knocked out of the ACC Tournament by Wake Forest, with Daivien Williamson sinking a go-ahead 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds left to put the Demon Deacons up 77-74.[1]

Boeheim, who is 78 years old, is one of the winningest coaches in NCAA basketball history, with 1,015 recognized wins and 35 NCAA Tournament appearances, 18 Sweet 16 berths, seven Elite Eight appearances, five Final Fours, three national championship appearances and the 2003 national championship.[2] Syracuse Chancellor Kent Syverud said: “There is no doubt in my mind that without Jim Boeheim, Syracuse Basketball would not be the powerhouse program it is today. Jim has invested and dedicated the majority of his life to building this program, cultivating generations of student-athletes and representing his alma mater with pride and distinction. I extend my deep appreciation and gratitude to an alumnus who epitomizes what it means to be ‘Forever Orange.'”[3]

Despite his incredible record, there is still some confusion over whether he made the decision to retire or if the school decided to nudge him out. After the loss to Wake Forest, Boeheim said in a postgame news conference that his status with the Orange would be the university's choice.[4] He also alluded to retirement prior to Syracuse University’s announcement, saying “I gave my retirement speech on the court last Saturday and I gave it in the press conference afterwards, and nobody figured it out.”[2]

Adrian Autry, who has been an assistant on Boeheim’s staff since 2011, will be promoted to head coach.[5] Autry, 51, played for Boeheim and has been the associate head coach since 2017.[6] He coaches the Syracuse forwards and recruits all positions for the Orange.[7] In 12 years as an assistant, Syracuse has qualified for the NCAA Tournament seven times, with Final Four appearances in 2013 and 2016.[5]

Jim Boeheim was a walk-on guard from nearby Lyons, New York when he arrived on the Syracuse University campus in 1962.[8] After his playing career ended, he stayed and became an assistant coach, and in 1976, he was named head coach.[9]
