Oregon State Hosts Washington State in Three-Game College Baseball Series at Goss Stadium

The Oregon State Beavers host the Washington State Cougars in a three-game college baseball series at Goss Stadium this weekend.^[0] Oregon State (10-2, 0-0) is coming off of a series victory, while the Cougars (11-1, 0-0) have won seven games in a row and are off to their best start since 1980.^[0]

The Beavers have won five consecutive series and eight of the last 10 games against the Cougars.^[1] Oregon State opened each of the last two seasons with 10-1 records, and have enjoyed another strong start in 2023. Following their loss on the first game of the season, they went on an eight-game winning streak before splitting a Saturday doubleheader at Cal Poly.^[2] So far, OSU has had an excellent start to the season, going undefeated in a four-game tournament in Surprise, Arizona, and then sweeping a three-game series at home against Coppin State. They then followed that up with a winning record of three out of four games at Cal Poly.^[2]

The Cougars have been one of the early-season surprises in the conference, leading the Pac-12 in scoring (117 runs, 9.8 per game), on-base percentage (.439) and stolen bases (18). Outfielder Jonah Advincula is batting .438 with five doubles, 16 RBIs, 14 runs scored and six stolen bases.^[3] Sam Brown is hitting .438 with 10 RBIs and seven runs scored over the last four games.^[3] The Cougars’ pitching staff also leads the conference in strikeouts per nine innings (11.9).^[4]

The probable starters for Friday night’s opener are Oregon State’s RHP Jaren Hunter (1-0, 4.66 ERA) and Washington State’s RHP Grant Taylor (1-0, 2.13 ERA).^[0] On Saturday, Oregon State will send RHP Trent Sellers (1-1, 1.59 ERA) to the mound and the Cougars will counter with RHP Dakota Hawkins (1-1, 4.15 ERA). On Sunday, Oregon State’s RHP Jacob Kmatz (1-1, 2.25 ERA) and Washington State’s RHP Caden Kaelber (2-0, 2.00 ERA) will square off.
